Reager’s House of European Great Danes
Natural vs. Cropped Ears
Natural vs. Cropped Ears in Great Danes
Ear cropping in Great Danes is a personal choice. We respect both options and want our buyers to be fully informed.
Natural Ears
European Great Danes are traditionally shown and bred with natural uncropped ears. Many European countries have banned ear cropping entirely. Natural ears require no surgery, no recovery time, and are increasingly the preferred choice worldwide.
Cropped Ears
Ear cropping is still practiced in the United States. If you prefer cropped ears, find a veterinarian experienced in the procedure and plan for intensive aftercare including posting and taping — often 4 to 6 months. Cropping is typically done between 7 and 12 weeks of age.
Our Position
We do not crop ears ourselves. If a buyer chooses to have ears cropped, we ask that it be done by an experienced, reputable veterinarian within the appropriate age window. We can provide guidance on finding qualified practitioners.
